The discipline is the strategy.

clearbox automates a published, rules-based value algorithm — companies ranked by earnings yield and return on capital, bought in evenly sized batches, sold on a tax-aware one-year clock. It shows you what the rules produce and when each window opens. You execute at your own brokerage. Your money never touches us.

Free tier, no card required. clearbox is a tracking and scheduling tool, not an investment advisor.

The Today view: a calendar of the next buy and sell windows and a summary of portfolio value.

How it works

One loop, repeated. clearbox does the bookkeeping; you keep your hands on the wheel.

  1. Get your tradesheet.

When a buy or sell window approaches, clearbox emails you a tradesheet: which tickers, what dollar amounts, and the date to act by. Buys come from the top of the ranked screen under your settings; sells are timed around the one-year mark based on your recorded purchase dates.

  2. Trade at your own brokerage.

Execute the trades in the account you already have. clearbox never holds your money and never places orders for you.

  3. Confirm what you did.

Record your fills back in clearbox — edit the pre-filled trades to match what actually executed. Trades attribute to the right batch automatically.

  4. clearbox keeps the books.

Prices refresh daily. Splits, mergers, renames, and dividends apply to your positions automatically. Recently sold tickers stay out of new recommendations. When numbers drift from your brokerage, reconciliation finds why.

That’s the whole relationship: read the email, make the trades, confirm them. The system does everything a spreadsheet was supposed to.

What you’ll actually use

Today knows what today needs.

Most days it says “nothing” — a calendar of the next buy and sell windows and a pulse of your portfolio. When a window opens, Today becomes the tradesheet: tickers, amounts, and a step-through execution wizard.

The Today view in its waiting state.
Demo data — not actual results.

Every batch, every lot, current value.

Positions grouped the way the strategy actually holds them — dated batches with per-lot cost basis, live prices, and gain/loss. Share counts stay true through splits, mergers, and renames.

The Portfolio view: batches with per-lot cost basis and current values.
Demo data — not actual results.

Today’s ranked list, with reasons.

The current screen under your settings — earnings yield, return on capital, market-cap floor — with badges explaining why a ticker won’t be bought (you hold it, you sold it recently, you’ve excluded it).

The Screener view: a ranked list with badges explaining exclusions.
Demo data — not actual results.

Returns computed the way brokerages compute them.

Time-weighted and money-weighted returns over your actual trade history, built to reconcile against your brokerage’s own statements — not a vanity number.

The Performance view: return metrics and a portfolio value chart.
Demo data — not actual results.

FAQ

Fair questions

Is this investment advice?

No. clearbox is a bookkeeping and scheduling tool that applies rules you choose to data about your own portfolio. It doesn’t know your financial situation and doesn’t make recommendations tailored to you. For advice, talk to a licensed advisor.

Does clearbox hold my money or place trades?

No. You trade at your own brokerage, in your own account. clearbox never has access to your funds. (A future automated tier will be opt-in and clearly separate.)

What strategy does it run?

The rules-based value algorithm popularized by Joel Greenblatt as the “Magic Formula”: rank companies by earnings yield and return on capital, buy the best-ranked in evenly sized batches on a schedule, hold about a year, sell with tax treatment in mind, replace, repeat. clearbox’s job isn’t the idea — it’s making sure the algorithm gets executed the same way every time. clearbox is an independent tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by anyone associated with the method.

What does the free tier actually include?

A full ledger: manual trade recording, batch grouping, a portfolio view with live prices, the ranked screener view, and the screener email. Free means free — it’s not a trial and it doesn’t expire.

Which brokerages work with it?

Any of them, because execution is manual — you place the trades wherever you already invest. Activity-history import is built around Fidelity’s export format first, with others to follow.

What happens if I cancel Tracker?

Your account drops back to Ledger. Nothing is deleted — every trade, batch, and setting stays, and the manual tools keep working. Re-upgrading picks up where you left off.

Why clearbox exists

I built clearbox because I run this strategy myself and got tired of the spreadsheet. The rules are simple; keeping them is the hard part.
